YouthVille Detroit is a program of YouthVille Detroit

YouthVille promotes a holistic and integrated approach to developing youth by enhancing emotional, social, physical, mental and academic well-being through providing direct programs and research in partnership with others.

The 73,000 s.f. YouthVille facility provides a central place for youth to gather in a safe environment while learning new skills and developing positive peer and adult relationships.

With programs designed for and by kids, Youthville Detroit offers a broad range of youth development activities from art to computers, academics to fitness, Web radio broadcasting to music studio recording and much more within six core areas. It also provides multiple opportunities for adults to volunteer and interact with youth.

Representative activities in the six core areas are:

  • LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

    • Youth Advisory Council – want to help shape the programming in YouthVille or influence policy and procedures? Make application to join this select youth group that works with staff on issues impacting YouthVille
    • Youth Philanthropy – consider youth initiated grant applications and recommend projects for funding as part of the DYF’s Youth Grantmaking Making Committee
    • YouthVoice – interview for joining a core group of writers on YouthVille’s news team who produce news stories about YouthVille events, editorials and student spotlights
    • Ambassadors Club – Learn how to present tours and represent YouthVille when visitors are in the building
    • For Young Men Only – facilitated by experienced staff, the activity is designed to help develop young men into positive, productive, responsible citizens by addressing daily life situations
    • Ladylike – join a life skills development program that focuses on promoting physical, emotional and social well-being to support and guide the maturation process of young ladies.
    • Public Speaking – afraid of speaking in public? Participate with your friends in lively discussions and activities that make you a more confident speaker.

  • CULTURAL AND FINE ARTS

    • Poetry Writing – join Citywide Poet’s workshop of high school writers or convene with our in house collective of aspiring poets, storytellers and song writers
    • Ceramics – learn ceramics techniques from instructors of historic Pewabic Pottery
    • Art / Drawing and Painting – explore the basics of drawing, painting, sculpturing materials and techniques from instructors from the College of Creative Studies or join with your peers and staff from Art on the Move to create street art.
    • Dance – our program partner, Motor City Dance Factory, conducts classes in a multitude of dance forms from hip hop to jazz to salsa and much more
    • Basic Acting –receive training and performance opportunities in acting, singing and stage techniques from staff of the nationally award-winning Mosaic Youth Theatre
    • Jewelry Making – students receive basic instruction on jewelry creation

  • EDUCATION AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

    • Tutoring – need homework help? DYF staff partners with Wayne State University students to support students in the areas of reading , writing, mathematics, science and social studies
    • Basic Financial Literacy – want to have a basic understanding of credit matters, investments and banking services, attend a session facilitated by successful financial and business owners
    • Book Club – Interested in exploring new worlds, expanding imaginations and having fun, then join the YouthVille Read It Club
    • Chess – learn the fundamentals of chess and learn techniques to compete in local competitions

  • TECHNOLOGY

    • Graphics and Animation – learn the basics of animation using Macromedia Flash software and progress in later classes to more advanced techniques
    • Digital Photography – introduces youth to using digital cameras and to using Adobe Photoshop elements software to edit, enhance, organize and share their images
    • Create Your Own Electricity – become exposed to alternative energy sources and build devices that create various forms of energy
    • Help! My PC Is Broke – learn basic PC repair and Wi-Fi technology
    • Web Site and Personal Web Page Design – Instructors help students learn how to create web sites using Macromedia Dreamweaver; youth may also independently create their own personal web page
    • Cyber Café – just want to access your e-mail or look for tickets to the latest concert, then use the general access computers in the first floor Cyber Café
    • Knowledge Center Computers – Need to do research for a school paper, then use the PC’s in the 2nd floor Knowledge Center to find relevant sources

  • HEALTH AND FITNESS

    • Archery – progress from learning basic skill training in shooting techniques to successfully participating in various outside tournaments
    • Basketball – join Coach in learning basketball techniques but be prepared to learn various life skills as well
    • Volleyball Skills – Think Detroit PAL continues to partner with YouthVille in fielding a middle school girls volleyball team
    • Fitness Center – various classes are offered to girls and guys in aerobic strength training and other fitness related subjects in YouthVille’s professionally equipment fitness center
    • Health Clinic Services - need health services or confidential advice from health care professionals, then visit our on-site adolescent health services clinic operated by Henry Ford Health System; reservations may be required

  • MUSIC TECHNOLOGY AND PROGRAMS

    • Beat Making – the absolute beginner wanting to learn how to create beats and songs to seasoned users can access classes in our digital keyboard lab equipped with state of the art software and keyboards
    • Pro Tools Training – participants will learn to use Pro Tools, the industry standard in recording software
    • So You Want to Be a DJ – youth who have never touched a pair of turntables before, will learn basic DJ skills
    • What is Web Radio – Learn the basics of web radio, listen to radio samples and make a plan for your won radio show
    • Make You Own Radio Show – want to create your own DJ personality, editorial voice, set list and commercials, come join this activity class; once finished, your show will be broadcast over YouthVille’s internet radio station: YVR
    • News Radio – Want to learn journalism skills, join a group who will produce weekly YouthVille news programs, with headlines, interviews and investigative reports
    • Instrumental Music – YouthVille offers an array of instrumental music classes in drum line, piano, woodwinds, brasswinds and strings
    • Music Ensemble – for advanced players, Jazz Master Wendell Harrison will teach you how to express yourself through your instrument

SPOTLIGHT ON LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT

NASCAR - GOODYEAR RACING & DIVERSITY PROGRAM

Eight YouthVille high school members participated in the Goodyear Racing and Diversity Program with NASCAR. The G.R.A.D. Program provided the youth with the opportunity to get first-hand experience with NASCAR racing during the first phase of the program. They are now in the Second Phase of the Four Phase Program which will include two selected program participants who have met the Goodyear NASCAR requirements of completing their application packet.

Both youth will receive a NASCAR Event Weekend Internship in the area that they most have expressed and demonstrated interest. The NASCAR Event Weekend internship will be June 15, 2008. Internship location will be determined based upon the number of available races.

Students who have successfully completed the NASCAR Weekend Internship will eligible to apply for a Goodyear funded Scholarship to pursue post-high school educational opportunities (college etc...) One scholarship will be awarded will be awarded up to $30,000 maximum. The Fourth Phase will consist of a full summer internship.

Students interested in participating in the G.R.A.D. Program must be a high school junior or senior and a member of YouthVille. The G.R.A.D. Program will begin again in August 2008. To sign-up or for more information please contact Ms. Clark (313) 309-1305.
